What Is Matched Betting?

Bookmakers are businesses. They want new customers all the time, to send deals to and encourage them to hand over their cash. As a way to get new customers to sign up, bookmakers offer incentives. These incentives are usually free bets. These sign up bonuses mean that you can earn money, risk free – if you do it properly!

Matched betting is also referred to as lay bet matching or the double betting technique.

How Does It Work?

Lets look at how matched betting works with our matched betting for dummies help. The first thing to do is find a bookmaker offering a sign up bonus, set up your account, make your initial deposit and place your first bet. This is your qualifying bet.

Then go to an exchange site, such as Betfair, and “lay the bet”. Laying the bet means you are betting on a different outcome to whatever you bet on at the bookmakers.

Let's run through a matched betting for dummies example to make it simpler:-

If you are betting on a rugby match between Team X and Team Y, with your bet being for Team X to win, laying the bet elsewhere means you bet that Team X don’t win. It's important to remember that you aren’t betting on them to lose, but rather that they won’t win. Because of the way the exchange work, plus the commission taken, on this qualifying bet you will be losing up to 10% of your original bet. Betting £20 will mean you lose £2 – this is completely fine and all a part of the matched betting process.

Now you are £2 down, but you then have the free bet earned from the sign up incentive.

If the bookmaker you signed up with offered you a free £20 bet once you place a £20 bet, you now have £20 to play with, for free!

You then place a bet on something else, remembering to lay the bet at your exchange of choice.

Once that bet is settled and accounting for your small loss in the qualifying bet, you should walk away with 70-90% of the free bet – in this case you will be getting between £14 – £18, completely free!

Is It Legal?

Yes, it is legal. 100% legal. Obviously the bookmakers don't like you taking money off them, but it is 100% legal!
